New 14-Panel 3-Bay Hoppers are coming to N Scale.

The Bluford Shops N scale 14-Panel 3-Bay Hopper returns in nine new paint schemes. The design of this hopper was spearheaded by New York Central in the late ‘50s as they sought an alternative to the AAR 70-ton rib side hopper design. In the end, this 14-Panel design proved to be popular with more railroads than the AAR design. Our N scale models feature diecast slope sheet/hopper bay assemblies for plenty of weight – even when running empty, removeable loads, metal wheels, magnetically operating knuckle couplers, separately applied brake detail and carefully researched paint schemes. Pre-Orders are now open for release in third quarter of '24. MSRP: $33.95 each. As of the last website update, pre-orders are closed on items shown in RED.

Clinchfield Railroad bought this group of 323 (and probably more) hoppers secondhand from Pittsburgh & Lake Erie. Once on the property, the P&LE reporting marks were removed and CRR marks applied. Since the P&LE road numbers were in a range that was vacant on the CRR roster, the numbers were not changed. P&LE was a subsidiary of Penn Central at the time and a PC ‘worms” logo adorned the right end of each side. These cars will be available in 6 road numbers.

Delaware & Hudson took delivery of this batch of hoppers from Bethlehem Steel in 1958. Most were assigned to loading Ilmenite (titanium ore) at one of the nation’s largest deposits in New York. By 1974, re-painted cars were receiving this paint scheme. The fleet expanded in 1976 when D&H was granted extensive trackage rights on the newly created Conrail to provide some measure of competition. The deal included locomotives and rolling stock such as a number of Erie Lackawanna’s nearly identical hoppers built in the 60s by Greenville. These cars will be available in 6 road numbers.

Erie Lackawanna received this batch of 500 hoppers from Greenville in 1965. This batch had all black ribs (later deliveries had 2 yellow ribs per side.) They split their time hauling iron ore and bituminous coal (our models will be equipped with coal loads.) For this run we are including ACI tags which were applied to the cars after 1967. These cars will be available in 6 road numbers.

Florida East Coast’s largest commodity behind intermodal is gravel quarried in the area around Hialeah and used for construction projects in Florida and elsewhere. Built by Greenville in the summer of ’65, this group of hoppers is presented here as they appeared after 1974 with ACI tags and 2-box consolidated stencils. If the road number style looks familiar, it is the same one used by Southern Railway at the time. The two companies were unrelated but frequent interchange partners. These cars will be available in 6 road numbers.

Louisville & Nashville obtained this group of hoppers in the 1969 split of the Chicago & Eastern Illinois between L&N and Missouri Pacific. L&N received a half interest in the line from Chicago to Danville and full ownership of the Danville to Evansville route along with a share of C&EI’s locomotives and rolling stock. For this run, we present these cars as they appeared after 1974 with ACI tags and 2-box fomat consolidated stencils. These cars will be available in 6 road numbers.

Penn Central inherited their 14-Panel hoppers from New York Central who had developed the original design. By the end of 1974, ACI tags had been applied to the fleet and the 2-box consolidated stencil had been adopted. Hundreds of cars served with this lettering arrangement for many years after the creation of Conrail. These cars will be available in 6 road numbers.

Santa Fe took delivery of their Ga-162 class hoppers from Greenville in 1967. This was one of several groups of these 14-Panel hoppers with subtle differences in the layout of the lettering applied from group to group. For instance, the hopper door instructions on the Ga-162 cars were especially large. For this run, we are including the ACI tags and 2-box format consolidated stencils. These cars will be available in 6 road numbers.

Western Maryland received this group of hoppers from Bethlehem Steel in 1958. The use of roller bearing trucks on  hopper cars was still a novelty and the hoppers were delivered with yellow ends to remind brakemen to set the handbrakes when setting out cars. As use of these trucks spread, WM dispensed with the yellow ends as cars were repainted although the R in the yellow circle remained. By the mid-70s, ACI tags and 2-box format consolidated stencils had been applied. These cars will be available in 6 road numbers.

For most of its history, Canada Southern operated as a subsidiary of the New York Central System. They ran from the Windsor area, northeast on the Canadian side of Lake Erie to the Niagara Falls – Buffalo area. In the 1960s and ‘70s Canada Southern/NYC, CN, Ontario Northland, P&LE, and TH&B pooled a fleet of hoppers to move iron ore from a mine in Dane, Ontario to steel mills in the United States. The round stencil you see near the middle of the car was applied to all of the CASO cars in this service. The CANADA SOUTHERN lettering on this run featues the second of two versions applied to these cars. These cars will be available in 4 road numbers.

Note two of the road numbers, 906545 and 922261

marks, replicating the prototypes.
